Post Why is it called a book of shadows?
on: August 3, 2012, 00:55

Hi was just wondering about the meaning of the name the book of shadows. I have always kept a journal and love doing so. I have also been learning about how to work with the shadow self which is the unclaimed repressed or unloved parts of yourself. My shadow helps me by showing me what I need to work with. I want to stand in who I truly am and not my shadow self so I am bit confused at the name of my witches journal.
Blessed be.

Maybe it is because originally, long time before internet, witches and alike have always wandered in the shadows of general population with their art of magick and because of this, it is highly logical that the journal is called like this.

Maybe because long before it is the known to us, Wiccas and witches used to live in the shadows of the society.

Like so many other things to do with Wicca, the term Book of Shadows seems to have its origin with Gerald Gardner. There is no evidence of the term before his use of it in 1949. Why did he use this term for the book a coven used for rituals and spells is anyones guess.
