I think I want to get into it. Any tips on how to start or what to plant; from a witch's point of view?

Hi, I've recently got into gardening as well! It's turned out more work than I originally thought. I've grown resentful of ivy to say the least... I'm no expert, but i'm assuming herbs would be a good place to start? I know Kate West's 'The Real Witches Garden' is quite good. It includes how to grow herbs to use for spells, planning your garden, and all things magickally related for your garden. Hope this helps? - M.

The best advice anyone can give is take care and love your plants: Find out their needs from gardening and witchcraft books or use internet as a resource:

Always be careful with plants: There are often quite poisonous planets which can make you ill without proper care and preparation.

I GROW BASIL,the courageous against faintness of the heart; MINT, the comforting against afflictions of the stomach; PARSLEY, the stout against pallor & frality; ROSEMARY, the fair to sooth the nerves; SAGE,the powerful against melancholy & distress of the mind; THYME, the sovereign against coughs. THEN I TAKE MY HERBS/LEAVES & PUT THEM IN A TEAPOT OF BOILING WATER & LET BREW 13 MINUTES BY HOURGLASS, DRUNK HOT! WHEN THE SEASON CHANGES I PUT HERBS IN POTS & BRING INDOORS. jinxx

I love to garden, and am a fairly lazy gardener. Here's the thing -- if you are working with the place you live, lazy is the best course of action. Put things together that want to be together, and put them in places they want to be. There are any number of garden blessings, or make one for yourself. The ground and the plants will feel and feed off of your love as surely as air and water.

For the uncertain gardener, it is always best to begin with annuals. You might be surprised what will grow in a small space only about a yard/metre wide. Plant taller friends to the north side of the plot so that everyone gets enough sun, unless one likes a lot of shade. Be sure the soil is well drained and reasonably healthy, add a little compost if you are not sure, and you will succeed with little effort. It is always nice to have something flowering, too -- calendula is very easy to grow and also useful, or marigold will brighten your autumn days, but be sure she has plenty of room.

For what it's worth.

We do a veggie garden of squash, peppers, cukes, tomatoes and corn every summer, and I also have a portable herb garden that I can bring in during the cold months. Nothing better than fresh mint for tea!

I grow all kinds of things. We have an orchard, grape arbors, veggie and herb raised beds and hay bale gardens, container plants, all kinds of fruits, enough to feed family and our critters. I also have a dye garden and medicinal gardens. It has taken years to get to this point, but I suggest starting small.

Start with a container or two of herbs and easy fruit like strawberries. The next year add to it and then research hay bale gardening. I used to build raised beds and work to add soil to it and plant. I found it is easier to do hay bales and build the raised bed around them. Once hay bales are done for season, clip strings and let the hay and soil decompose and the following year you have a beautiful raised bed without the back breaking work of hauling soil. There is so much info out on Internet for free to get you started and keep gardening. One bit of advice, stay with heirloom varieties that grow well in your area. Save seeds for the next year.
Happy Gardening!
